Whistler RCMP warn community of event management fraud

Staff report
December 21, 2022 3:28pm

Whistler RCMP are warning the community of fraud involving event management and ticketing. Fraudsters are using names of local businesses and non-profits in these website links to attract more people to pay for these fake events.

The advisory comes after police received reports about scamsters who are creating fake event links and trying to get people to pay for these fake events. In one instance, an event where a person had to pay $23 was set up by scamsters.

Whistler Public Library is notifying community that events hosted at the library are free. “We want to make sure our community knows we don’t charge for events, and it’s very sad to be misrepresented,” says Mikale Senton of the Whistler Public Library.  “We are working with the RCMP to ensure these fraudulent event listings are taken down.”

To prevent becoming a target of this fraud, police recommend checking event management and ticketing websites first to ensure these are actual scheduled events. For local library events, residents can call 604-935-8435, or email publicservices@whistlerlibrary.ca to enquire about events.

Whistler RCMP asks anyone with any information regarding this to contact the local detachment at 604-932-3044, or, contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or go to www.solvecrime.ca
