District of Squamish is supporting a resolution to the Lower Mainland Local Government Association that asks the province for urgent action on climate change.
The Annual General Meeting of UBCM will be held from May 3 to 5 this year.
The resolution states that municipalities have supported urgent action on climate change, in particular by transitioning away from fossil fuels. it further states that municipalities have also asked that the Municipal Finance Authority divest from fossil fuels and also support a transition away from fossil fuels, and Clean BC be updated to ensure every new building in BC is “zero emissions” and “net-zero energy ready” by 2032.
It further goes on to say that the current LMLGA Executive Policy on sponsorship states that a, “… sponsor’s public image, mandate, products, and services must be consistent with the goals and values of the Lower Mainland LGA”, and the most recent (6th) International Panel on Climate Change Report identifies lobbying and advertising by fossil fuel companies as an obstacle to climate action.”
The resolution states that the Lower Mainland Local Government Association directs its board to take meaningful, prudent steps to move away from fossil fuel sponsorships.
