MLA Sturdy reintroduces bill to include First Nations reps in Sea to Sky Transit Commission

staff report
March 28, 2023 6:26am

West Vancouver-Sea to Sky MLA Jordan Sturdy has re-introduced, for the third time, legislation that would expand the composition of the Sea to Sky Transit Commission to include Squamish and Lil’wat First Nations representatives.

“The Sea to Sky region is growing rapidly. Since 2017, First Nations and local governments have been working in partnership to develop regional transit services for our growing region,” said Sturdy. “Currently, only Sea to Sky local government elected officials are eligible to sit on the transit commission. This bill is intended to ensure that the exclusion of the Squamish and Lil’wat First Nations from the commission is remedied.”

“The Sea to Sky Highway improvement project from 2006-2009 was transformative for the communities along the corridor. Reliability, travel times, and public safety improved significantly while economic opportunities expanded. A regional transit service would be the most cost-effective option to provide the public, visitors, and workers transportation alternatives while improving connections between communities and Metro Vancouver,” he added.

This is a good idea. At present Squamish Transit does not serve Squamish Nation Reservations. It would obviously be better to include Squamish Nation in Squamish Transit service than to create a whole new service just for the Reservations.
