The District of Squamish is planning to install an uphill bike lane on Highway Way South. District recently submitted a Request for Proposals to prospective proponents to submit proposals for Highlands Way South Bike Lane.
The bike lane will be installed as part of 2023 Active Transportation improvements planned by the District of Squamish. These improvements include a multi-use path section, on-street bike lane section, curbing changes, landscaping, trees and irrigation line, as well as the installation of approximately 320 metre of a new waterline. The location of work is from Mamquam Road to the Boulevard, and the work is expected to be complete by May 2023.
The contractor will be responsible for all temporary traffic control on streets and vehicle traffic will be accommodated through site with delays not exceeding two minutes.
However, one day closure of the Highway traffic would be acceptable to accommodate the installation of the watermain crossing on Highlands Way South, the bid document states. Lack of dedicated bike lanes, insufficient lighting, narrow bike lanes and shoulders, traffic safety, attitude and behaviour of road users were some top concerns identified by residents in the District’s Active Transportation Plan.
