The District of Squamish is looking for a consultant who can provide in-depth land planning and feasibility study for an Innovation Area on District-owned lots on Pioneer Way in the business park.

According to the RFP, the District is focused on generating a net increase in employments lands and space to support a growing workforce. The District currently owns two parcels of vacant land on Pionner Way. It’s the last remaining opportunity in the Squamish Business Park to support the objective of creating an innovation hub. “The District is focussed on generating a net increase in employment lands and space to support a growing workforce,” the tender notes.

The consultant is expected to do a background review and create land options for an innovation areas at the two vacant lots. The District is also looking for a consultant to work on creating a civic bloc in Downtown Squamish. The Civic Block could replace the current Municipal Hall, a high priority for District, replace the library, and expand community centre opportunities downtown.

The civic block could be a single or multiple building, and a collaboration of Arts, Culture and Heritage Strategy under the umbrella of Gallery, Library, Archive and Museum. It could possibly include Junction Park, Xwu’nekw Park and Stan Clarke Park, though the size of the buildings will be limited by land constraints.

The successful proponent for these two jobs is required to complete the work by January 31, 2024.

How about building a works yard , municipal hall and library and school board office and rental units for Vancouver Coastal Health who already rent 10 buildings!

The potential loss of Junction Park, Xwu’nekw Park and Stan Clarke Park is concerning.
More so, we have a municipal hall, we have a a library. While they could improve, they both work well enough.
What we don’t have is inclusive policy for vehicle residents and allotted land for those with permits to stay safely. Meanwhile, district owned parking lots stand empty at night and / or are fenced off, while district bylaw push vehicle residents out of town, to full campgrounds, the shelter or walmart.

It would be nice if we lived in a world where people and park spaces mattered more than more of the same. But generating more money is more important huh?
