With as many as 49 crashes, the intersection of Highway 99 and Cleveland Avenue remains the most dangerous intersection in Squamish, a position it has held for last five years, according to data published this year by ICBC.
Of these 49 crashes, as many as 16 were classified as casualty crashes, which means crashes that result in injury or fatality. The rest of the crashes are called Property damage only, which are crashes that result in material damage but not in injury or fatality.
Five most dangerous intersections in Squamish
Cleveland Avenue and Highway 99 and Loggers Lane: 49
Highway 99 and Mamquam Road and Turning Lane: 22
Finch Drive and Highway 99 and Industrial Way and Turning Lane: 17
Garibaldi Way and Highway 99 and Turning Lane: 17
Clark Drive and Highway 99 and Turning Lane: 14
However, the crash data provided by ICBC doesn’t provide a complete representation of all crash areas as it excludes crashes in parking lots and those involved parked vehicles in the District. While the Ministry of Transportation has created an acceleration lane on Cleveland and Highway 99 intersection to reduce the possibility of collision, it has yet to make improvements to other dangerous intersections.
One such intersection is Alice Lake and Highway 99, which is the sixth most dangerous intersection with 12 casualty crashes reported on the lane. In April this year, the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure told Squamish Reporter it’s planning to conduct a full engineering and traffic review of the intersection.
“This review will allow for an informed decision to be made on possible intersection improvements, including accounting for varying traffic volumes throughout the year,” MOTI said.
