Wildlife alert after sow and cub charge cyclist on Squamish trail

District is asking the community to avoid the trail.

The Conservation Officer Service and District of Squamish are issuing a warning following a bear encounter between a sow with a cub and a cyclist on the Golf Course Trail. The incident occurred in the afternoon of Thursday, August 17.

The sow charged the cyclist and contacted the front tire of their bike causing the cyclist to go over their handlebar. The cyclist is safe and did not require medical attention for their injuries, District said. The incident is considered a defensive response and the Conservation Officer Service has put up signage warning residents.

Please avoid the area if possible and be vigilant if choosing to recreate in the area. Wildlife sightings and encounters can be reported to the Conservation Officer Service 24/7 hotline: 1.877.952.7277.
