GFL Recycle Depot on Queens Way to shut down in May

staff report
January 17, 2024 10:57am

The GFL Queens Way Recycle Depot will be closing in May this year.  GFL has informed the District of Squamish that it will terminate its contract with the district’s public recycling depot service.

The District of Squamish is now actively seeking a new location for the Recycle Depot. The staff is set to present a report to the Council in the coming weeks, highlighting the available options and suggesting a way forward.

The District said that the decision to terminate the contract is by the agreement between the two parties, which allows either party to terminate the contract with a six-month notice period.  GFL notified the district of termination on October 31, 2023. In their notice of closure, GFL cited space constraints, business requirements, and public safety considerations as the reasons behind their decision.

However, GFL has promised to support the community by transitioning the site to a safer location. The Recycle Depot plays an essential role in diverting recyclable waste from landfills. The District of Squamish recognizes the importance of this service and is committed to finding a new location accessible, convenient, and safe for residents and visitors alike, the District said.

As the district continues exploring options for the new location, more information will be available to the public.
