At a council meeting on February 6, the council approved a development permit for a 41-unit apartment building at 1055 Finch Drive in Squamish.

The Finch Drive development by local developer Jason Wood will donate two units to the Squamish Community Housing Society.  The property was rezoned from Residential 1  to Comprehensive Development Zone in 2022.

The development approved on Feb 6 will have 22 one-bedroom, 13 two-bedroom and six three-bedroom units. One two-bedroom and one three-bedroom unit in the building will be donated to the Squamish Housing Society. This application is also proposing childcare space that can accommodate 25 children. The building meets the CD 101 zoning requirements, including parking and bicycle storage.

The design also includes an above-grade parkade that doubles as a platform for multiple art installations by local artists. “These perforated metal screens, with a pattern to be designed by local artists, mirror the surrounding area and promote the idea of drawing inspiration from the patterns and textures found in the forested and rocky environment,” the proponents say.

A pedestrian trail close to the west side of the building will provide access to a park, and a shared outdoor amenity space is provided on the second storey. A 44-unit rental apartment building proposed on the property to the south was approved by Council last year. The proponents are planning a low-carbon, all-electric development with the possibility of solar power generation.
