The District of Squamish has issued a tender to replace the bridge deck at Mamquam River on Government Road. The tender also includes an Active Transportation Analysis to explore conceptual design options for improved active transportation facilities on the Mamquam River Bridge.

According to the tender, the District seeks a highly qualified consultant to assist with detailed design and construction services for replacing the deteriorated concrete bridge deck at the Mamquam River Bridge. The bridge rehabilitation work will also involve generating a conceptual design for a potential addition to the bridge that would widen the road for pedestrians and cyclists.

The tender was issued on March 8, and the work is anticipated to take place in May. The consultant is expected to review three options, which may include widening the existing bridge to accommodate separated pedestrian and 2-way cycling facilities on the east side of the structure, widening the existing bridge structure to create shared multi-use pathways for people biking and walking on the east side of the structure, or retaining the existing Active Transportation facilities and adding a dedicated structure for walking and biking.

The district is also seeking responses from qualified professionals for the operation of ‘pedestrian drawbridges over navigable waters’ concerning the challenges, risks, expectations, and potential costs associated with the staffing and operation of such a facility. This bid is related to the pedestrian bridge being built by BOSA properties.

“In-water piling work remains underway at Sea and Sky by Bosa Properties in order to support the structure of the new pedestrian bridge. This initial phase of construction will continue until the end of February 2024, with out-of-water foreshore construction expected to be complete by Spring 2024,” the District said.
