Child dies after UTV plunges into BC lake

staff report
March 25, 2024 2:55pm

A child’s death in Williams Lake has become a tragic reminder to be more cautious as spring weather thaws icy surfaces of lakes and ponds in communities across the province.

On Saturday, March 23, Williams Lake responded to an incident at Tyee Lake after receiving reports of a UTV that broke through the ice, claiming the life of a young child.

“We were sadly reminded of how fast a fun activity can turn into a tragedy,” Williams Lake RCMP said. “We want to remind everyone to be aware of the rapidly changing ice conditions on our lakes and ponds.”

The Williams Lake RCMP is working with the BC Coroners Service, which is leading the investigation into the incident. Police didn’t release any further details about the incident.
