Recycle BC seeks new host for Squamish recycling depot

staff report
April 2, 2024 7:54am

Are you interested in hosting a recycling depot in Squamish? Get in touch with Recycle BC.

Recycle BC works with local partners to establish and operate recycling depot sites in communities across the province. If you want to host a recycling depot in Squamish, contact Recycle BC at info@recyclebc.ca or the District’s Sustainability team at zerowaste@squamish.ca.

The GFL Queens Way Recycle Depot will be closing in May. GFL has informed the District of Squamish that it will terminate its contract with the district’s public recycling depot service.

In a press release, the District said efforts are underway to establish a new long-term recycling depot in Squamish following the closure of Queens Way Recycle Depot. GFL is ending the contract due to space constraints and site safety concerns.

The District of Squamish supports Recycle BC, a non-profit organization responsible for residential packaging and paper recycling in British Columbia. Recycle BC services a network of recycling depots across the province and works with private operators to host drop-off collection sites and collect materials.

Recycle BC is also responsible for the cost of recycling this material across the province, as residential packaging and paper recycling is regulated through Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) under the provincial Recycling Regulation.

District said having a central, accessible Recycle Depot is essential to supporting residents in diverting recycling waste from the landfill. Although the District of Squamish Landfill and London Drugs include an on-site Recycling Depot, Recycle BC must provide depot-only material collection services in Squamish.

All efforts are being made to finalize a new drop-off recycling location to continue offering the services currently provided at the Queens Way location, district added.
