staff report
June 8, 2024 6:10am

A public safety alert has been issued for the Squamish Estuary following a close encounter with a black bear on Thursday afternoon.

According to the district alert, two people walking their leashed dog were suddenly charged and swatted at by a black bear. However,  no physical contact occurred, and no injuries were reported.

Authorities are urging the public to exercise caution when visiting the estuary and recommend that people travel in groups and carry bear spray. Residents are also advised to consider alternative locations for walking their dogs. In response to the incident, Conservation Officers are installing additional signage and will remain on standby to ensure public safety.

The Conservation Officer Service encourages the public to report any bear conflicts or aggressive bear behavior immediately via the 24-hour Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) hotline at 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP).
