Cougar attacks woman, dog in Vancouver Island provincial park

staff report
June 11, 2024 7:35am

A woman and her dog recover after a cougar attack in Strathcona Park on Vancouver Island. The attack happened over the weekend, and a helicopter was sent to rescue the hikers.

The incident occurred on Saturday when two women were hiking with their off-leash dogs near Landslide Lake in Strathcona Park’s remote area. The cougar attacked one of the dogs and bit one of the women, though the hikers were able to use bear spray, which made the cougar to run away.

The injured woman was treated in the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries, and the dog is expected to recover. There have been reports of cougar sightings and activity in the area.

The Elk River Trail has been closed to the public until further notice.
