Squamish Fire Rescue urges the public to exercise caution after responding to two wildland fires in less than 48 hours, believed to have been caused by illegal, unattended campfires.
“These fires are a stark reminder that even with the significant rainfall and cooler temperatures that we’ve seen in Squamish recently, the ground and vegetation are still very dry and at risk of wildfire,” the department stated.
Residents and visitors are reminded that fires in public spaces like riverbanks, mountainsides, beaches, and trails are strictly prohibited within the District of Squamish boundaries year-round. The current conditions provide a fuel source for fires that could devastate the community.
“Squamish Fire Rescue would like to take this opportunity to remind the public that campfires are only allowed under permit on residential private property within the District of Squamish boundaries when conditions are safe,” SFR said.
Squamish Fire Rescue and the BC Wildfire Service have contained the Debecks Hill wildfire and are working to eliminate hotspots throughout the evening. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by BC Wildfire Service and Natural Resources Officers.
