Police impound motorycle and car speeding at 140 km/hour in Squamish

Car and red motorcycle impounded.
staff report
July 17, 2024 10:34am

On the heels of a tragic trend of fatal crashes, BC Highway Patrol are pleading with drivers around the Province to slow down.

On July 14, 2024, a BC Highway Patrol Squamish member observed a blue 4-door sedan and red motorcycle travelling through the heart of Squamish at over 140 kph in the posted 70 kph zone.

BC Highway Patrol Member was able to safely conduct a traffic stop, at which time the officer found that the motorcycle rider was also the owner of the blue sedan and had a friend driving the vehicle ‘clearing’ the route for the motorcyclist. This was the third vehicle impounded that day by BC Highway Patrol Squamish.

Since July 1, BC Highway Patrol has issued 132 violation tickets, counting for excessive speed in the province.

Insp. Badry, the acting Operations Officer for BC Highway Patrol said, Every driver needs to realize that the consequences for excessive speeding go far beyond getting an expensive ticket and your vehicle impounded. You have far less time to react to anything when going that fast, which is why excessive speed is so deadly.”

The speeding that is 100% over the posted speed limit (unless true and provable emergency) should be grounds for confiscating vehicles permanently and suspending the driver’s license for min 10 years…

We already surpass the world in horrible, reckless and distracted drivers in BC. This “crime” of speeding at double the posted limit through Squamish needs special attention by the Crown Prosecutors in North Vancouver to establish a precedent. It would be justifiable if both vehicles were seized by the Crown and sold at auction, but I do not believe that law exists for traffic “crime” as opposed to drug trafficking and money laundering. In drug trafficking and money laundering cases, the vehicle “used in the commission” of a crime can be subject to forfeiture to the Crown. Seems a bit unfair to exclude “traffic crime” that put lives at risk of death.
