Police watchdog investigating after man injured during arrest in Squamish

staff report
July 30, 2024 6:54am

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC is investigating the circumstances around the arrest of one person in Squamish on June 21, 2024.

According to the information provided by RCMP, police were searching for a stolen vehicle along Highway 99 near Porteau Cove. After locating the grey Nissan Frontier, officers searched a nearby rural wooded area and found a person they believed was involved in the theft.

This person was injured as officers tried to arrest the person with the help of a police service dog. The individual was taken to a hospital for treatment.

The IIO was notified of the incident the same day and immediately commenced an investigation. After reviewing medical records, it was determined that the person’s injuries met the serious harm threshold defined in Part 11 of the Police Act. The investigation will now seek to confirm what happened during the arrest, how the injury occurred, and whether police actions were necessary, reasonable, and proportionate in the circumstances.

The IIO is asking any person who saw the arrest or who has video footage to please contact the IIO Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or via the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
