Bear break-ins in Brackendale prompt DOS wildlife alert

August 9, 2024 6:51pm

The Conservation Officer Service and District of  Squamish are alerting residents following reports of a black bear entering garages to access garbage. The bear entered through an open window, broke through a garage door in Brackendale, and attempted to access a shed and outdoor freezer.

Here are some tips by COS

Please watch windows and doors and continue to report bear conflicts or aggressive bear behaviour to 1-877-952-7277.

Residents are urged to take steps to help prevent bear conflicts, as well as familiarize themselves with safety precautions, including:

Keep an eye on all doors and windows, and do not leave them unsupervised. Securing and monitoring your home in Bear Country is essential.

Put a trash can deodorizer (e.g. baking soda or kitty litter) at the bottom of the totes to reduce the smell.

If your tote is in a garage, place a fan to help circulate the air.

Never approach a bear. Be aware of your surroundings and ensure pets are leashed when out for a walk. For more tips, please visit WildSafeBC.com.

Conservation Officers are monitoring reports of bear activity in the area and will respond as necessary to ensure public safety. Reports can be made to the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) hotline at 1-877-952-7277. Please continue to report bear conflicts or aggressive bear behaviour to the RAPP Hotline at 1-877-952-7277.
