Squamish has a new destination for martial arts enthusiasts with the opening of Mountain Jiujitsu Squamish, a state-of-the-art facility that promises to elevate the local martial arts scene. It is located at #110, 39455 Discovery Way, in the new business plaza near the Sandman Hotel.
The gym is the brainchild of local business owners and entrepreneurs Mike Nasu, Chris Nguyen, Adrian Blachut, and Jiu-Jitsu enthusiast Johnny Thomaidis. They came together in 2020 with a shared vision: to build one of British Columbia’s most unique and exceptional martial arts facilities.
“We believed Squamish was missing a truly comprehensive Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program that focussed on the art of Jiu-Jitsu,” says Mike Nasu. Their dream has now materialized into a stunning, brand-new facility boasting over 2,000 square feet of mat space spread across two floors, with sprung floors on the main level for added comfort and safety.
One of the gym’s standout features is a beautiful mural of Squamish, created by local artist Liesl Petersen, which adds a touch of the community’s spirit to the space.
Mountain Jiujitsu Squamish offers a range of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and kickboxing classes for kids and adults. In addition, the gym has recently introduced a Muay Thai kickboxing program led by the highly respected instructor Pedro Silva from Dream Fighters Canada.
“This is the largest martial arts facility north of the Lions Gate Bridge,” Nasu notes. “We offer morning, noon, and evening classes, catering to everyone, especially beginners. We are not a gym focused on training fighters; we are a community promoting a healthy lifestyle and safe training.”
Mountain Jiujitsu Squamish is still in its infancy, but it has become the largest martial arts club in Squamish. They are set to become a cornerstone of the local community, providing a welcoming environment for anyone looking to learn martial arts.
