Property crime in Squamish has climbed 6.6% in 2024, according to new data released by the Sea to Sky RCMP. The report highlights an alarming 189% surge in auto thefts, with cases rising from 9 in 2023 to 26 in 2024.

Thefts under $5,000 also saw a notable jump of 18.5%, while thefts over $5,000 increased by 33%. Bike thefts rose 19%, and mischief over $5,000 incidents tripled, despite small decreases in fraud and break-and-enter offences. Theft from vehicles remained steady, with only a slight 0.7% increase, and possession of stolen property cases dipped slightly by 4.2%.

Police are urging residents to secure their vehicles and property and report suspicious activity as they work to curb these rising trends.

Violent crime fell by 15%

According to the latest statistics from the Sea to Sky RCMP, violent crime in Squamish fell by nearly 15% in 2024. After a surge in 2023, violent crime dropped from 509 to 434 cases.

Criminal harassment, however, more than doubled, jumping 120% from 10 to 22 cases. Conversely, reports of robbery fell by 50%, and domestic violence incidents dropped by almost 29%. Sexual assaults also declined, down 17.6% from the previous year.

Officers from the local detachment will present to the council on March 25.
