Lions Bay Search and Rescue is urging hikers not to rely on ChatGPT or Google Maps for backcountry navigation after rescuing two people on the Unnecessary Mountain trail Sunday.
The hikers became unsteady while descending in snowy conditions. Volunteers from LBSAR responded, provided proper gear, and helped them down safely. “This call was a good reminder that AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Maps are not always best for backcountry navigation!” the SAR team said. “Trails in the mountains can be steep, exposed, and conditions change fast with elevation. Snow and ice are still very much present in the mountains.”
SAR reminded outdoor enthusiasts to use trusted, local navigation sources, carry proper tools like a map, compass or GPS, and always pack the 10 Essentials—including food, water, extra layers, and a headlamp. “Mountain safety starts with preparation. Know before you go!”
Last Friday evening, LBSAR also responded to a call on Brunswick Mountain after hikers became stranded on steep snow near the summit without mountaineering gear. One hiker, separated from the group and with a dead phone, went missing. Teams were flown to the summit just before sunset to assist. The missing hiker had gone far off-route, walking down a remote creek, and was eventually located on a logging road by a containment team. All hikers were safely out by 1 a.m. LBSAR thanked nearby campers who kept the group warm around a fire.
