
A local housing advocacy group is urging the District of Squamish to ensure affordable housing is part of its plan to sell 17 acres of publicly owned land.
A petition, launched by the Dwift Housing Society, asks the district to designate a portion of the property for non-profit housing development as part of any sale agreement. The District of Squamish is inviting proposals to purchase or lease up to 17 acres of prime land in the Squamish Business Park.
While society acknowledges the need for infrastructure investment, it argues that land sales are a chance to address Squamish’s growing housing crisis. “We believe that the future of Squamish should be one where everyone, regardless of income, has access to a safe, affordable place to call home,” the petition reads.
Dwift Housing Society says local non-profit housing providers are prepared to purchase the land at market value, allowing the district to raise necessary funds while supporting affordable housing initiatives. The group calls for a planning process that includes non-profit developers and public engagement.
The petition warns that more local families and workers may be priced out of the community without action. “From teachers and healthcare workers to retail staff and service employees, many people who make Squamish a thriving community can’t afford to live here,” it states.
The petition outlines three key demands: a portion of the land is reserved for affordable housing, the district works with non-profit developers, and the process is transparent and inclusive. “Affordable housing is an investment in our community’s future,” the petition says. “We need YOU to join us in ensuring the District of Squamish prioritizes affordable housing in this important development.”
