FortisBC to begin controlled blasting at laydown yard near Valleycliffe

Staff report
May 28, 2025 8:27am

FortisBC will begin controlled blasting near Valleycliffe starting May 28, 2025, as part of ongoing preparations for a natural gas pipeline project.

The work follows substantial tree and vegetation clearing in a temporary construction laydown yard northeast of the Valleycliffe neighbourhood, the company said in a notice. The next phase involves rock excavation through controlled blasting—a method the company has already employed for several months in the nearby Ray Basin area.

Blasting is scheduled to occur between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and is expected to continue for two to three weeks. The blasts will several times daily and are being conducted following safety protocols. Once site preparation is complete, the laydown yard will be used for storing equipment and materials, as well as for parking and fuelling.

Similar construction activities are expected to extend northwest along the newly established right-of-way toward town, continuing into 2025.

Residents are advised to avoid entering restricted areas during this period. FortisBC has thanked the public for its ongoing patience and encouraged anyone with questions to contact the project team at egp@fortisbc.com or 1-855-380-5784. Updates are also available through the company’s construction newsletter.
