The BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) is urging caution for anyone using the Estuary Trail—also known as the Swan Trail—after a trail runner was bluff charged by two black bears on Wednesday, May 29. The runner was not injured in the encounter.
COS says it is monitoring bear activity in the area and will respond as needed to ensure public safety. Officials are reminding trail users to stay alert and take preventive measures when travelling through bear country.
Recommended precautions include:
-
Carrying bear spray and knowing how to use it.
-
Travelling in groups and making noise to avoid surprising wildlife.
-
Keeping dogs leashed at all times, as off-leash pets can provoke bears and inadvertently lead them back to people.
-
Watching for bear signs such as fresh scat, overturned logs, or ripe berry patches.
-
Exercising extra caution around blind corners or in dense vegetation.
The public is encouraged to report any wildlife conflicts or sightings to the Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) hotline at 1-877-952-7277.
