A new non-profit organization is bringing inclusive, community-driven literary programming to the Sea-to-Sky Corridor.

The Gather Literary Society, officially incorporated in February, focuses on improving access to diverse books and building connections through the literary arts. Its mission includes delivering accessible, inclusion-centred programming for all ages, expanding public access to inclusive books, and creating a community around literature and local artists.

The organization is the latest initiative from Julie Wilkins, local author and owner of Gather Books & Lovely Things. Wilkins said the society is a natural extension of her work at Gather Bookshop and has its roots in the Inclusive Culture Club, a Squamish-based initiative launched in 2021. That group partnered with local non-profits to distribute inclusive books and literary content during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The Gather Literary Society is an extension of the values and offerings of Gather Bookshop, and a nod to the way our bookish journey began in 2021 as the Inclusive Culture Club,” said Wilkins.

The Inclusive Culture Club later evolved into The Little Bookshop, a mobile children’s bookstore, and eventually into Gather Books & Lovely Things, which now has two locations in B.C.

Currently in its start-up phase, Gather Literary Society is consulting with community members, applying for grants, and developing programming. Volunteer opportunities will be available in the future, but supporters can already contribute by purchasing “Maybe a Book Will Help” merchandise, designed by B.C. artist Alex Maertz.

The proceeds are used directly to fund the society’s operations.
