Squamish residents are invited to learn more about a new rental and supportive housing development proposed for the corner of Government Road and Centennial Way.
The District of Squamish will host a drop-in community information session on Wednesday, June 25, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Mamquam Elementary School gym. Registration is not required; people are being asked to RSVP at squamish-government-road-community-session.eventbrite.ca.
The proposal—led by BC Housing, Squamish Community Housing Society, and Squamish Helping Hands Society, in partnership with the District of Squamish—calls for approximately 165 new homes across two buildings. One building would include 60 to 65 supportive homes. The other would offer around 100 affordable rental units.
The supportive housing units would be studio homes for local adults 19 and over, including seniors and people with disabilities. Residents would pay rent, sign program agreements, and receive support to help maintain stable housing. All units would be staffed 24/7 and include access to meals, life skills and employment training, and health and wellness supports. Referral pathways to substance-use treatment and recovery would also be available. The Squamish Helping Hands Society would operate the building.
Affordable homes for low- to moderate-income households
The second building would provide approximately 100 rental homes—a mix of studio, one-, two-, and three-bedroom units—for low- and moderate-income residents. Priority would be given to seniors, people with disabilities, and families. Rents for most units would be based on 30% of household income, and residents would need to meet specific income and household size criteria, as well as be able to live independently.
According to the District of Squamish’s Housing Needs Report, 6,840 new housing units are needed by 2031, with 24% required for households earning less than $45,000 a year.
The affordable housing portion is being led by Squamish Community Housing Society (Housing Squamish), a non-profit established in 2021. The group is applying for funding through the Province’s Community Housing Fund, though funding is not yet confirmed.
