The Conservation Officer Service has euthanized a black bear found injured on the Sea-to-Sky Highway near Squamish. According to a news report on CTV, the bear was found on the highway on Saturday.
“The bear was a traffic safety hazard and was unable to leave the scene due to its injuries,” the spokesperson wrote. “The bear was assessed to have critical injuries and was euthanized by COs,” the service is quoted as saying.
The Conservation Officer Service and District of Squamish have also issued a warning following multiple reports of a sow with two cubs showing defensive behaviour towards people using the trail systems near the Mamquam River.
Signs have been posted warning residents to avoid the area if possible and to be vigilant if they choose to recreate in the area. COS is asking residents to avoid the area and keep their dogs on leash. All bear conflicts and aggressive bear behaviour can be reported to the Conservation Officer Service 24-hour Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) hotline at 1-877-952-7277 (RAPP).
- Leash your dog: Dogs must be on leash to avoid harassing wildlife and contributing to an unsafe situation.
- Be alert and aware: Anticipate wildlife sightings and watch for signs of fresh activity such as paw prints and scat, especially during the early morning and evening.
- Avoid surprises: Make noise and use your voice to make your presence on the trails known.

- Don’t take photos: Give wildlife their space and do not stop to view, photograph or feed them.
- Back away: During a wildlife encounter, do not run or ride away, back up slowly and never turn your back to the animal.
