The B.C. River Forecast Centre has issued a high streamflow advisory for the South Coast and North Shore Mountains.
According to a press release from the Ministry of Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, an unseasonably wet frontal system is forecast to bring heavy rainfall to the region on Friday.
Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued rainfall warnings, with up to 50 millimetres expected in most areas and more than 80 millimetres possible over higher terrain. The heaviest rainfall is expected Friday afternoon.
Officials say rivers in the South Coast, including Howe Sound, Sea-to-Sky and Pemberton, are expected to rise rapidly on Friday and into early Saturday.
In glaciated systems such as the Squamish River, flows are already high due to glacial melt and could increase further with rainfall.
The ministry warns that high flows and sudden rises in rivers may not cause major flooding but can pose risks, including road washouts and safety hazards for people near fast-moving water. Flows could reach levels seen once every two years.
Residents in Whistler and Pemberton may also see elevated streamflow in headwater areas, even if rainfall totals are lower than at the coast.
The River Forecast Centre will continue monitoring conditions and issue updates as needed. Officials advise the public to prepare for flood hazards by visiting PreparedBC.
