COS investigating elk killing in Squamish Valley

staff report
September 1, 2025 5:30pm

Conservation Officers are investigating the illegal shooting and mutilation of a bull elk discovered dead near the Ashlu River in the Squamish Valley.

The animal was found on the afternoon of August 30, with its antlers sawed off. Officers say evidence at the scene indicates the elk had been shot, and the killing likely occurred sometime between 10 p.m. on August 29 and 8 a.m. the following morning.

The area is close to a provincial recreation site and several informal camping spots, leading Conservation Officers to believe there may have been witnesses. They are urging anyone who saw or heard anything suspicious—particularly someone who may have witnessed the elk being shot or the antlers being removed on August 30—to come forward.

Information can be reported anonymously through the RAPP (Report All Poachers and Polluters) line at 1-877-952-7277, which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The BC Conservation Officer Service continues to investigate.
