A Squamish couple is facing a devastating medical crisis after both husband and wife were diagnosed with advanced-stage cancers within months of each other. Darnell Waite was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma earlier this spring. Since then, she has been travelling from Squamish to Vancouver every two weeks for treatments at the BC Cancer Centre.

On August 12, while returning from one of those treatments, her husband, John Waite, suddenly lost his peripheral vision while driving. He was referred for immediate medical attention, and within two days, surgeons removed a tumour the size of a golf ball from behind his ear.

According to a GoFundMe page launched by family friends, John has now been diagnosed with Stage 4 Glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer. Unlike Darnell’s biweekly treatments, John will require daily therapy sessions in Vancouver. With both parents in treatment, the family is facing significant logistical and financial challenges. They are seeking temporary housing in Vancouver to stay close to the hospital and allow their two teenage children to spend time with them.

“We’ve set up this fundraiser to assist the Waite family as they navigate some unthinkable challenges ahead,” the GoFundMe organizers wrote. The campaign aims to help cover housing costs and provide financial relief during this period.
