The Britannia Mine Museum is celebrating Día de los Muertos with a series of family-friendly events over three weekends this Halloween season, the Museum said in a press release. The festivities will run on October 18–19, October 25–26, and November 1–2 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The celebration blends the traditions of the Mexican holiday, which honours life and memory, with Halloween-themed activities. Visitors can take special underground tours to explore the elements of earth, fire, air, and water while learning about alebrijes, fantastical creatures inspired by Mexican folk art.
The museum’s Machine Shop will feature colourful decorations, marigold-lined altars, and interactive displays. Guests can also explore the Monarch Forest, a Mexican village, and the Calavera Tunnel, while enjoying activities like making paper marigolds, colouring sugar skulls, and a monarch butterfly scavenger hunt.
“This year’s celebration brings together education, art, and community in a fun, family-friendly way,” the museum said.
Tickets for the Día de los Muertos events are $25 for visitors under 17 and $30 for adults, with children under four admitted free. Event tickets include underground tours, themed displays, permanent exhibits, and gold panning. Visitors can upgrade to include the museum’s BOOM! Mill Show for an additional $10.
The Britannia Mine Museum is located about 45 minutes north of Vancouver on the Sea-to-Sky Highway and offers exhibits including the underground mine train, gold panning, the historic concentrator Mill, and STEAM-focused Terra Lab activities.
