Two motorcyclists were arrested after being caught speeding on Highway 99 near Porteau Cove, just moments after picking up their bikes from impound, according to a news release by the BC Highway Patrol.

On October 13, a 54-year-old man from Burnaby was recorded at 168 km/h southbound on Highway 99 while riding a Suzuki. The man told officers he had “just picked his motorcycle up from a seven-day excessive-speeding impound.”

The next day, a 40-year-old Vancouver man was stopped at 143 km/h in the same stretch, an 80 km/h zone. He also said he had just retrieved his motorcycle following a seven-day impound.

In a statement, BCHP Corporal Michael McLaughlin explained that a second excessive-speeding offence triggers a 30-day impound, increased storage and insurance costs, and higher “high-risk” driver premiums. “You can see how BC Highway Patrol is using enforcement to educate people about speeding consequences,” he said.

BCHP officials estimate that each rider’s total impound-related costs will exceed $3,000.
