BC Parks notice: Ongoing rockfall hazard at Stawamus Chief Park

staff report
October 26, 2025 8:40am

BC Parks has reopened several popular climbing areas at Stawamus Chief Park that were closed after major rockfall incidents in 2021, but is also warning of ongoing rockfall hazards. The reopened zones include the Grand Wall, Western Dihedral, Zodiac Wall, Sheriff’s Badge, and Photophobia areas.

While the closures have been lifted, BC Parks is warning that rockfall hazards remain throughout the park. Cautionary signs have been placed along well-used trails and climbing access routes to alert visitors to potential dangers.

Officials say there are still no sanctioned trails within the identified hazard zones, and the agency does not recommend travel in these areas. Anyone who chooses to enter does so at their own risk. “Rockfall hazards continue to exist throughout Stawamus Chief Park,” BC Parks said in a notice. “We encourage all visitors to exercise caution, stay informed, and make safety a top priority when exploring the park.”
