A BASE jumper was rescued late last night after crashing into a cliff wall shortly after takeoff on Slhanay, according to Squamish Search and Rescue.
The rescue team responded quickly after a witness reported the incident. Guided by a friend of the jumper, a 25-member crew made their way to the launch site and located the man perched on a small rock feature about 60 feet below the edge. He was described as wet, cold, but conscious.
Due to the steep and rugged terrain, rescuers determined that carrying the injured jumper by stretcher would be extremely difficult. Assistance was called in from North Shore Rescue and Talon Helicopters, whose team performed a hoist extraction — a move that saved rescuers several hours of hazardous travel through rough ground.
The young man sustained injuries to both ankles but was otherwise in good condition.
