Site preparation is set to begin this week at 39900 Government Road and Centennial Way, the site of a planned supportive and affordable housing development.
In a press release, the District of Squamish confirmed tree removal will take approximately two weeks. The trees are being cleared now to avoid the bird nesting season. Residents can expect temporary fencing, a closed informal access path through the site, and brief traffic delays as trucks enter and exit.
Tree stumps will remain in place for now.
According to the press release, the affordable housing component proposed for the north side of the site did not receive provincial funding through the Community Housing Fund in the recent provincial budget. However, Squamish Housing will pursue alternative funding, and the District will continue processing the Development Permit application. Being shovel-ready will strengthen the project’s position with future funding partners.
Meanwhile, the supportive housing project on the south side remains fully funded and on track. District said full site clearing is required to establish finished grades and enable construction of retaining walls, a drive aisle, and parking, all tied to the supportive housing build.
Tree removal is also needed to relocate underground utilities and a multi-use path.
On wildlife, the press release noted that barred owls, which are common in the area, are not listed as threatened or endangered in B.C. and carry no specific habitat protections that would prevent clearing under the permit. The Environmental Monitor will conduct pre-clearing nest checks, and work will halt immediately if any active nesting is found.
