SOFI Sheds Light on District Finances

There were 28 district employees who made more than $70,000 in 2011, the Statement of Financial Information released by the district reveals.

Last year, there were 27 employees who made it to the over-$70,000 club.

The district has also released councillor salaries, expenses, and in a departure from last year, the benefits accrued to each councillor.

Leading the pack for staff was former CAO Kevin Ramsay ($170,019), followed by former GM of Community Services, Cameron Chalmers ($128, 314), fire chief Russ Inouye ($118,156), community development director Mick Gottardi ($114, 437), and Financial Services GM, Joanne Greenlees.

The new salaries list reflects a collective salary bump of $97,000 for at least 32 exempt staff members, as reported in the Squamish Reporter a few months ago.

Squamish councillors earned $47,605 in benefits, and another $19,989 in expenses.

The financial information report was released along with the annual report during a special business meeting of the council on Tuesday, June. 26.

The report also shed a light on district finances.

The district collected over $18 million in taxation, and another $15 million in a constellation of fees and charges, including utility user fees (around $5 million), sale of services (around $3 million), investment income (around $1 million), penalties and interest on taxes, grants in lieu of taxes, etc.

After all expenses were paid, there was a surplus of $191, 880, 109 left in the district coffers.

 When it comes to expenses, managing all district departments took away a big chunk of money: $21 million.

 Of all the district departments, it was protective services that had the biggest expense at $6 million.

 The other departments followed: General government ($4.9 million), parks and recreation ($3.4 million), planning services ($2.9 million), and sanitation and waste removal ($1.4 million).
