Local residents let go of their hair for a good cause on Sunday, May 11, at the Squamish Station Mall, raising over $14,000 for cancer patients.

Balding for Dollars is head shaves, chopped locks and other “FUN” fundraising events initiated by parents, hospital staff, friends, families, teams, clubs and communities touched by childhood cancer and blood disorders.

The goal is to raise awareness and funds to support the Oncology, Hematology, and BMT (Bone Marrow Transplant) programs at BC Children’s Hospital.

As many as 23 people shaved their heads, and three had their pony tails cut to donate for Wigs for Kids.

Elementary school student, Shayanee Hayashi, had the longest pony to donate for the cause.

Some other top fundraisers were Chris O’connor, Katherine Carrington, Daniel Rothgeber and Squamish Dragon Boat Assn Team Chawanda.

School events were also held by Howe Sound Senior Secondary and Stawamus Elementary schools, while Elliot Moses, Chris Pettingill and Katherine Carrington also rose to the challenge at the April Chamber meeting.

Cutting Loose, Devlin and Concrete Blonde helped shave the participants.

Squamish Station, Nesters, Rental Network Squamish Dragonboat Assoc. Starbucks and the Blinking Fish along with the auction donors all helped to make this a successful event!
