Police urge caution following theft at Garibaldi Provincial Park

February 5, 2018 10:38am

Squamish RCMP is urging the public to be vigilant about their belongings as weather improves and more people get out to enjoy the local provincial parks.

Last week, police were notified of a theft from a vehicle parked at Garibaldi Lake Provincial Park.  The owner of the vehicle reported that he was at Garibaldi Lake a few days and his wallet was stolen from the vehicle.

Squamish RCMP had a large number of reported thefts from vehicles at Garibaldi Lake Provincial Park in 2017 and with the nicer weather returning, the police is urging people to keep their valuables at home or carry them while they enjoy the parks.

BC Provincial Park is also asking the public to be take extra caution for their belongings in provincial parks. “Thieves have been known to operate in the Rubble Creek and Elfin Lakes parking lots, targeting vehicles and personal property of park users,” BC Parks note.

“Be sure you remove all valuables from your vehicle prior to leaving it unattended, and leave unnecessary belongings at home. If you have any information regarding these incidents, please contact Squamish RCMP at 604 892-6100.”

Two dozen cars were broken into a few years ago at the Garibaldi Provincial Park and thefts have been also reported in the past years in the Alice Lake and Squamish Chief parking lots as well at the Shannon Falls Provincial Park.

Squamish RCMP is also reporting of damage to several vehicles on the The Boulevard in the Garibaldi Highlands neighbourhood in town last week. The  complainant stated their two vehicles, which were parked on The Boulevard, had a tire punctured on one vehicle and the other vehicle had multiple scratches into the paint.  The offence is believed to have taken place during the night on February 2, 2018.

Squamish RCMP were also called to a complaint of a male kicking on the door of a shed located at Pavilion Park in downtown Squamish on Feb 8.  Upon arrival police attempted to arrest the male who fought with police but was eventually taken into custody.  The male, who was well known to police, was released on several charges with a future court date and has been placed on multiple conditions including one where he is not to be in Squamish.
