District of Squamish urges caution as river levels rise

November 27, 2018 6:32am

District of Squamish is urging citizens to stay clear of trails close to the rivers and waterways as water continue to rise in local rivers and tributaries.

The DOS operations crews are paying close attention to local rivers following a flood watch and high streamflow advisory issued by the BC River Forecast Centre.

The rivers are running high but have not reached alarming levels, although Squamish is experiencing localized minor pooling in some areas, DOS said.

“Full crews are monitoring river levels and inspecting storm systems throughout the day and night, but be aware that flooding can occur, and often happens rapidly,” district said.

Meanwhile the River Forecast Centre is maintaining its high streamflow advisory for Squamish River, and other tributary watersheds along the Sea to Sky corridor.

High Streamflow Advisory is issued when water levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly, but no major flooding is expected.

The River Forecast Centre is also retaining a flood watch for Stawamus River, which means river levels are rising and will approach or may exceed bank full.

The District is also urging locals to sign up for Squamish Alert, a free service that sends you a voicemail, text or email with emergency information tailored to your neighbourhood, if an emergency situation evolves.

You can sign up at Squamish.ca/Alert.
