A young driver whose car was impounded by the police last month isn’t getting into the driver’s seat any time soon.
The driver was stopped for going 197 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone on Highway 99.
The officer submitted a report to RoadSafetyBC requesting a review of the driver’s licence in consideration of a driving prohibition.
After a review of the report, RoadSafetyBC prohibited the driver for eight months.
Last months, officers took four young drivers off the road for excessive speed.
In each case the driver was under 25 years of age, and three of the four were male. One involved a motorcycle and two only had a Learner driver’s licence.
The vehicles were impounded for a minimum of 7 days and tickets issued in the amount of $483.
According to provincial data, an average of 82 people* die every year on BC’s roadways where speeding was a contributing factor to the collision.
Police cannot stress enough the importance of obeying the speed limits – slowing down puts you at less risk of injury or death.
David Lassmann says
These are extreme cases of a more general lack of consideration for others. Exceeding speed limits is the rule in BC, not the exception. Other sorts of poor and inconsiderate drivingr also are seen, such as not signalling at intersections and not yielding to a car wanting to change lanes. This type of behaviour pushes the risk levels higher and we all end up paying for it.
