Five motorcycles impounded for excessive speeding on Highway 99

May 10, 2019 11:34am

West Vancouver Police have impounded five motorcycles after they were observed allegedly travelling at a speed of 135 km/hr in a posted 80 km/hr zone.

They were travelling just north of Horseshoe Bay when a traffic officer observed then going at a high rate of speed.

The officer determined by a radar device that the motorcycles were allegedly travelling at a speed of 135 km/hr.

The motorcycles were stopped by police and the operators were issued violation tickets of $368 for excessive speed.

All five of the motorcycles were also impounded for seven days under provincial legislation.

“When drivers choose to speed, it puts everyone at risk” says Constable Kevin Goodmurphy, WVPD. “Our officers will be stepping up enforcement during the month of May in an effort to help change this dangerous behavior.”

Anyone who witnesses high risk driving behavior in West Vancouver is asked to contact WVPD at 604-925-7300, and if possible, be able to provide details such as license plates and vehicle descriptions.

May is high risk driving month and WVPD, along with ICBC and the provincial government, are urging drivers to slow down. According to ICBC, on average, 26 people are killed every year in the Lower Mainland from speed-related crashes.

Good! Slow down! We live in Squamish and crossing the highway is the scariest thing! They fly by red lights with no concern. They almost run into each other all the time! All tourists! Never drove this highway before or they think they know the highway, which is even worse. Bikes 🚲 on this road all the time, still drive too fast. We hate the cyclists too but still. Enjoy the ride, it’s beautiful around here. Stay safe
