A local LGBTQ organisation has decided to disband and ‘make way’ for new groups that support the vision of an inclusive community.
Safe ‘n Sound Squamish will disband in July. Since its inception in 2014, Safe ‘n Sound Squamish celebrated LGBTQ+ citizens, their families and allies, by means of awareness, education, visibility, and resources, said the organisers.
Since its inception in 2014, a small group of committed volunteers have organized conferences, events, initiatives, and training.
With many members of the Board and Planning Committee moving out of Squamish or having to turn their attentions to career or personal matters, its members carefully considered how best to proceed.
“When we started Safe ‘n Sound, it was at a time when youth, families, and community members were desperate for increased action and education on this topic,” says Margo Dent, the organization’s Executive Director.
“We still believe that there is much work to be done in this community, but we think that Squamish is ready for and rife with a new wave of LGBTQ+ leaders and allies who will take up the mantle,” says Dent.
