Brennan Park to close for electricity upgrades

June 20, 2019 3:14am

Major electrical upgrades at Brennan Park Recreation Centre will result in a partial closure of the facility on Monday, June 24 and Tuesday, June 25, with an entire facility and campground closure on Wednesday, June 26 and Thursday, June 27.

The facility is expected to reopen on Friday, June 28, though morning guests to the facility should check the status before attending.

Closure details:

Monday, June 24             Arena side closed; pool and front office remains open

Tuesday, June 25             Arena side closed; pool and front office remains open

Wednesday, June 26       Entire facility and campground closed

Thursday, June 27            Entire facility and campground closed

Friday, June 28                  Anticipated reopening – please verify status at squamish.ca or phone 604.898.3604

The District of Squamish Municipal Campground will be closed on June 26 and 27. Campground reservations and walk-ins will not be available during this time as there is no ability to register guests, nor offer washroom facilities. For a comprehensive list of available campsites in Squamish during the closure please visit exploresquamish.com/camping-guide.

Upgrades include replacement of original switch gear (switches, fuses and circuit breakers) for both the aquatic centre and recreation centre to ensure the system can be safely operated in the event of an emergency. This work has been recommended by Technical Safety BC.

The other work involves replacement of the backup generator that has reached end of service life. The new generator will significantly increase power to equipment such as lighting, HVAC, computers and outlets. This upgrade is critical as it will allow us to effectively power Brennan Park Recreation Centre as a reception centre in the event of an emergency.

The district will also install a pad-mount transformer that will improve safety and provide enough power to allow for future expansion of the facility.

Last year, the District invited residents to provide feedback on proposed options for the replacement or renovation and expansion of Brennan Park Recreation Centre.

As many as 81 per cent of residents who provided their feedback chose the option to expand and upgrade the facility. The District is working on a Brennan Park Master Plan for the surrounding fields and lands, which will be developed and shaped with input from the community.
