BC Hydro will be conducting rock blasting in Smoke Bluffs Park through August 17. The work is to replace two sets of BC Hydro High Voltage Transmission lines situated above the Bluffs.
During blasting there is a high risk of rock, boulders, and debris being dislodged and falling down rock climbing faces or onto hiking trails. In addition, the high voltage power lines will remain live during the work adding potential risk to park users.
Park users are being asked to pay close attention to signage and flagging personnel if using the park:
BC Hydro will have a restricted access zone in place, and park users must report to flagging personnel before proceeding into the Restricted Access Zone.
During blasting, closures of the Restricted Access Zone between 5 and 15 minutes in length will be required.
Climbing crags #9 (Runestone Wall), #11 (Boulder Gully) and #46 (Crag X) will be closed for the duration.
Intermittent closures will be in effect seven days per week during daylight hours.
The August long weekend is an exception – no intermittent closures will take place between 1 p.m. on Friday, August 2 to 5 a.m. on Tuesday, August 6.
