Paraglider suffers life-threatening injuries after fall on log booms in Mamquam Blind Channel

August 29, 2019 12:58pm

A paraglider was airlifted to hospital in Vancouver after a fall while paragliding from the Squamish Chief mountain.

From the initial investigation, police said it appears the man was paragliding off the Chief when he went into a spin and fell to the log boom area of Mamquam blind channel in Howe Sound.

Police received a request for assistance on August 29, at 7:45 am from the Squamish Fire Department regarding a paraglider who had fallen on to the logs in the blind channel.

Squamish RCMP launched their police boat alongside Squamish Fire Rescue members and retrieved the 40 year old man from the water.  They were able to bring the man into the boat and he was transported to an awaiting Ambulance.  A short time later the man was flown to a lower mainland hospital via BCEHS Air Ambulance with life threatening injuries.

“The quick action of the log sort employees along with marine staff, Squamish Fire, Ambulance and Squamish RCMP were essential to provide an extremely quick response to this serious situation,” said Sgt. Sascha Banks.

Banks said this summer season has been tough one for all emergency and Squamish Search and Rescue teams with several accident related to falls from Squamish Chief.
