Watch out: Over 40,000 people will crowd Downtown Vancouver this month

September 21, 2019 5:22pm

The Port Authority of Vancouver is advising people of the high volume of cruise passengers that will be expected at and around Canada Place this weekend and the next.

Travelers and locals should plan ahead to prepare for crowds and increased traffic in surrounding areas. Expect higher than normal traffic volumes in downtown Vancouver and an increase in demand for taxis and transit.

As many as 28,000 passengers are expected to disembark from three cruise ships today and over 21,000 cruise passengers will crowd Canada Place and the surrounding area next weekend.

In addition to extra on-site staff, Vancouver Police Department Traffic Authority will be managing traffic and pedestrian flows at nearby crosswalks.

More than one million cruise passengers on 290 ship visits are expected in Vancouver during the 2019 cruise season, reflecting a 21 per cent increase in cruise passenger volume over 2018. The Vancouver cruise industry brings in nearly $3 million in direct activity to the local economy for each cruise ship that visits Canada Place at the Port of Vancouver.
