Squamish RCMP is concerned about two calls concerning firearm incidents that came from Downtown Squamish.
On Thursday December 12th, at approximately 6 am Squamish RCMP were called to a residence on Third Avenue in downtown Squamish after a woman said she was robbed at gunpoint.
Three men entered the home early morning wearing masks and brandishing firearms. They fled the home after assaulting one of the victims and taking several items.
Police were in the area because of a complaint of a possible Break and Enter to a garage and is looking at any connection between the events.
A second incident occurred on Friday, December 13th, at approximately 11:50 pm, when Squamish RCMP was called to a local bar on Cleveland Avenue after the staff at the premises had seized a loaded handgun after an altercation between group of men in the bar.
An hour later, police located and arrested the suspect who was believed to have the gun. Stewart Duncan, 48 years old, from Winnipeg, was remanded into custody and appeared in North Vancouver court today, December 16.
He is facing firearms related offences including unauthorized possession of a firearm and possession of a loaded firearm.
Firearms related calls in Squamish are rare and to have two in two days is concerning for police and for those in the community, said Sergeant Sascha Banks.
“We are extremely lucky no one was seriously injured and we are praising the quick action of the staff on Saturday night when they located the firearm,” she said.
No arrests have been made in the gunpoint robbery incident, although police believe the home was targeted.
Squamish RCMP are requesting anyone with any information or anyone who was in contact with Stewart while he was in Squamish to call the police at 604-892-6100, or contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, or go to their website: www.solvecrime.ca.
