It is a new year, a new day, but the same great spirit. Community is invited to be part of the Multicultural Day at Totem Hall on Saturday, February 1, from 1 pm to 4 pm.

The program starts at 1 pm.

For many years Multicultural day at Totem Hall was held in conjunction with Canada Day on July 1. Its inception, however, was unrelated.

In the summer of 1993, a group of youths traveling across Canada on a bus called Peace Bus ’93 was hosted by the Squamish Nation and spent one night bunkered down at Totem Hall.

The youth came from diverse backgrounds and their mission was to foster friendship between the many different peoples that make up our great country.

Gwen Harry and Donna Billy put out a call to local church and religious groups to help with food and hospitality. A few faith groups responded and something wonderful was set in motion. Everyone had such a good time that the hosts decided that this coming together to share and celebrate each other’s diversity must continue.

The event grew organically over the years and became part of Canada Day Celebrations. With increasing activities centred in the downtown area on July 01, it was decided to try a new date with a stand-alone event.

Organizers are hoping the new date will provide a good time for more youth to participate and have reached out to a group of Quest students who will be assisting with the event this year.

The event is hosted by Squamish Valley Elders in collaboration with Squamish Multifaith Association. It is a free event that includes a community feast, cultural presentations, dancing, children’s choir, musical presentations and a children’s crafting corner.

Come join us for a dynamic grassroots event that brings people together in a family oriented joyous celebration of diversity and culture. Program starts at 1 p.m.
