Volunteers needed for homeless count in Squamish

February 14, 2020 10:21am

Sea to Sky Community Services Society is looking for volunteers who can help with the homeless count in Squamish.

The one-day count will take place in Squamish on April 3, 2020.

Squamish is one of the 16 communities in BC where the province is partnering with BC Housing and the Homelessness Services Association of BC (HSABC) to better understand how those who are homeless can be supported.

On the day of counting, volunteers in teams of two will survey individuals experiencing homelessness by walking pre-determined routes through Squamish.

The volunteer teams will also be working at stations at designated community agencies. A standard shift will be of approximately three hours.

The volunteers must be 19 or above and below 70.

SSCS is looking for volunteers who are compassionate, friendly, non-judgemental and comfortable with one-on-one conversations.

Fill the application form if you are interested. If you have questions about the count in your community, or volunteering with the count, contact your Local Coordinator Chaelyn Falconer by phone at 604-698-9034 or email at chaelyn.falconer@sscs.ca.

The report from the 2018 homeless count stated that at least 7,655 people were experiencing homelessness in the Metro Vancouver region. Indigenous peoples and former youth in care are significantly over-represented in the homeless population.
