Sal Demare has been elected to the Squamish-Lillooet Regional District as the Electoral Area A Director.
Demare will be sworn in at an upcoming SLRD Board meeting on February 26, 2020. The by-election was called after John Courchesne resigned last fall from the position of director for personal reasons.
Steven Oakley and Sal Demare were the only two candidates running for the position in the by-election that was held on February 15.
“On behalf of the SLRD Board of Directors, I would like to thank both candidates for their commitment to their communities and to the regional district,” said SLRD chair Tony Rainbow.
“It’s a big commitment to run for public office, and we are fortunate to have had community-minded individuals come forward to fill this important role,” he said.
The SLRD is governed by a 10-member board of directors composed of four electoral area directors and six municipal directors.
There is one director from the District of Lillooet, one from the Village of Pemberton, two from the RMOW and two directors from the District of Squamish.
Electoral Area directors are elected by rural area voters during the local elections to serve a four-year term.
Demare will serve for the remainder of the current 2018-2022 term.
Municipal directors are first elected to their respective municipal council and then appointed by their council to serve on the regional district board.
